Woman charged in granddaughter's shooting

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Charges have been filed against the woman accused of shooting her teenage granddaughter.

Mary Alice Bell, 60, is charged with simple assault in the shooting, which happened Wednesday afternoon at a home in the 6500 block of Van Buren Road, located in Jackson's Presidential Hills subdivision.

According to police, Bell grabbed a gun from her bedroom while arguing with her 14-year-old granddaughter. The gun discharged, and a bullet ricocheted off the ground, grazing the teen's ankle.

The girl was hospitalized for minor injuries.

A double shooting happened outside the same home last week. Police said the men involved in that shooting did not live in the home, or even in the neighborhood.
