JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi) is among a throng of state and local dignitaries attending the grand opening and ribbon cutting at Jackson Pubic Schools' sparkling new Henry J. Kirksey Middle School on Highland Drive near Callaway High School.

The 84,000 sq. ft. school boasts 14 classrooms; art, band, and choral rooms; and other amenities. Construction cost was $15.6 million.

Henry Kirksey was an outspoken civil rights activist and one of the first two black men elected to the state senate after the Reconstruction era. He died at the age of 90.
