JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Nine years after the 9-11 attacks on America, those who risk their lives for our freedom are being honored.

A service was held Friday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Jackson to honor emergency responders.

Those who lost their lives on 9-11 were remembered through prayer and song. Police, fire, and other metro area first responders were in attendance.

Former Mississippi Governor William Winter was the guest speaker.

He urged everyone in attendance to be heroes like first responders, by helping build communities free of conflict or hate.

Deputy Chief Tyrone Lewis of the Jackson Police department left the event saying, "I think it was important all the first responders be here because of the lives that were given, the jobs that we do to show support to the families that lost loved ones in that tragic incident."
