STATEWIDE (WLBT)- Mississippi's victims of domestic abuse are using a hotline dispensing free legal advice.
The toll free hotline has received about 200 calls across the state since it began in June. The State Division of Public Safety provided the nonprofit Mississippi center for police and sheriffs with a grant totaling nearly $158,000.
More funding is being raised locally for the line. Advocates say it's too early to determine the program's success, but they say it has already been a valuable tool.
The magnolia state ranks fifth in the nation in domestic violence killings. For every 100,000 Mississippi women, two die each year from violence at home.
