CARROLLTON, Miss. (AP) - Carroll County supervisors have put off impending layoffs at the regional jail in Vaiden that included 2 of the county's deputies, at least for now.
Both Montgomery and Carroll counties have agreed to increase the amount paid for housing inmates from $20 to $25 per day, and area towns will increase to $35 per day.
Warden Arthur Smith told the board in August that the jail had been running a $60,000 deficit each month since May.
The Greenwood Commonwealth reports Sheriff Jerry Carver has been working with a consultant to get suggestions on how to make the jail's budget work. Carver said the plan includes using money from an excess revenue account and a depreciation account and increasing area towns' and counties' boarding fees.
