James Hutto charged with capital murder

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Hinds County authorities have filed capital murder charges against the man last seen with the Clinton woman who turned up missing and was later found dead in Edwards.

81-year-old Ethel Simpson was last seen Monday night with a convicted sex offender. Her body was recovered in Edwards on Friday.

Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart says dental records were used to confirm her identity.

Stewart said Simpson had suffered trauma to her head and neck. She said there were no signs of sexual abuse.

The man she was last seen with made his first court appearance yesterday in Lee County, Alabama.

James Hutto is charged with attempted murder and robbery for stabbing a man there. Bond has been set at $250,000 dollars.

Officials in Mississippi hope to have Hutto returned back here.

"We are going to get the paperwork over there tomorrow. We will be ready to have him extradited tomorrow if the governor over there would sign that, but I don't anticipate that being the case," said Attorney General Jim Hood.

Hutto was driving Simpson's car when he was arrested.

The two had met at the Baptist Healthplex in Clinton last Monday where Hutto was visiting as a guest. Now he is charged with capital murder in her death.
