Rankin County latest to issue burn ban

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - The dry weather has prompted another Mississippi county to issue a burn ban.

Tommy Steen, emergency operations director for Rankin County, says there have been about 40 grass and woods fires in his county in the past ten days. So he's filing paperwork with the Mississippi Forestry Commission to ban all outdoor residential burning until further notice.

Fourteen Mississippi counties already have burn bans in effect:

  • Chickasaw
  • Clay
  • DeSoto
  • Grenada
  • Hinds
  • Kemper
  • Lamar
  • Lauderdale
  • Lee
  • Monroe
  • Panola
  • Pontotoc
  • Rankin
  • Tate
