Officials issue burn ban in Jones County

Posted: Updated:

STATEWIDE (WLBT)- In Jones County officials have issued a burn ban on the heels of the national weather service's urgent red flag warning.

Three brush fires have claimed several acres in Jones County on Saturday. Jones County EOC director Don McKinnon says there should be absolutely no burning in Jones County for at least the next two weeks.

He says three fires took place after the burn ban was issued and those residents could be fined. McKinnon says low humidity, high winds, extremely dry grass, brush, and woodlands are why burn bans are needed.

"Take it like it is tornado warning. Take it serious, very serious and be responsible, don't burn. You know you have to wait a day or two. You might have to wait a week, two weeks to burn whatever you are going to burn", said Jones County EOC Director, Don McKinnon.

Wayne and Lamar Counties have also issued burn bans.
