BILLINGS, MT (NBC) - A Wyoming woman is safe and sound out of an ordeal straight out of a Hollywood movie.
It all began when 28-year-old Guy Hanway attempted to commit suicide and was brought to the Lander regional hospital.
He took a hospital worker hostage by using a paint scraper as a weapon, then fled.
Authorities said after leaving the facility, Hanway walked through the unlocked back door of a nearby home and took another hostage, a 30-year-old Lander woman who was inside the home.
Somewhere along the way the duo made a stop that could have saved the victim's life.
"They were able to obtain alcohol," Lt. Mark Kirkpatrick of the Billings, Montana Police Department explained. "Fortunately for our victim he drank himself into intoxication to where he passed out."
When they reached Billings, the victim tried to get the attention of the local police department by driving the wrong way down one-way streets and running stop signs as her alleged abductor slept.
She eventually came across a routine traffic stop in Billings, Montana, hundreds of miles away from Lander.
That's when the victim got out of the car and told the officer she'd been kidnapped.
"This young lady was absolutely fantastic," Kirkpatrick said. "She did absolutely everything right in a totally wrong situation. We have no idea how this would have played out had she not taken the action she did."
Hanway is charged with kidnapping, but since the incident spanned state lines Kirkpatrick said that charge will probably be changed to a federal kidnapping charge.
The victim was not physically harmed, but met with grief counselors to talk about the event.
