Jackson, MS (WLBT) - This week Jackson city leaders are welcoming a new business to one area of the capitol city, where development and growth has been slow.

Monday a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for a new Vowell's Fresh Market at the corner of McDowell road and Raymond road.

Vowell's is based out of Louisville, Mississippi. They own 9 locations in Mississippi and have one in Alabama.

50 new jobs were created with the construction of their south Jackson store.

The owners say they're really a mom and pop operation, and try to show that to customers through their service.

Store owner Todd Vowell says, "Mainly what we do is, as a company, we try to hold fast to the age old fashioned values my grandfather put in place a long time ago, those are the customer service, those are the fresh and quality meats and now with the deli baker and produce we just really try to do things the right way."

When Kroger closed its store three years ago, then ward 6 councilman Marshand Crisler accused the company of pulling out of south Jackson because of the racial make-up of the area.

Kroger responded saying this was an under-performing store, and the decision was simply based on financial reasons.
