MADISON COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Wildfire season has started. With it, the list of Mississippi counties under Burn Bans is growing. Madison County has now been added to the list where it is illegal to start fires.

A bush fire on East Sowell Road, near Highway 51, re-kindled Monday. The brush fire was knocked back Sunday.

A homeowner who lives close by saw flames again today and called for help. Fifth to sixty acres of brush and pasture went up in flames.

"Been busy lately Marsha. Between last Monday, the 24 we've fought 53 woods fires here in Madison County" said EOC Director Butch Hammack. "It's a high number, very unusual. Busy time of the year. This is the driest I've seen it in quite sometime."

Dry conditions, low humidity and gusty winds have combined to increase the danger of out of control grass, brush and woods fires to an extremely high level.

Residents are urged to abide by the Burn Ban and refrain from conducting any outdoor burning.

Under Mississippi law, any person who knowingly and willfully violates a burning ban can be fined up to $500.00.
