OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - A search committee at the University of Mississippi has released the images of the three candidates in the running to become the new Rebel mascot.
The unveiling of the drawings coincides with the final voting that began Wednesday for students, university employees, alumni and season ticket holders. The voting will continue until Oct. 12.
The Rebel Black Bear is an imposing figure, but the committee said in a release that it also would appeal to children. The Rebel Land Shark is a sharp-tooth, athletic-looking creature. The personification of the school cheer, Hotty Toddy, would be a character in a gray body suit with built-in muscles and a full face mask.
The old mascot, Colonel Rebel, which was a caricature of an Old South gentleman, was retired from the sidelines in 2003.
