Canton schools seek parental involvement

CANTON, MS (WLBT) - The Canton Public School District is rated as "At Risk of Failing" in the latest round of accountability tests.

Canton High School itself is in the "Failing" category.

The district wants entire families to get involved in efforts to improve. On Saturday, the annual Parent Involvement Fair was held at the high school. Parents from across the district were invited to take part in workshops on different facets of education. The ultimate goal is to create a more productive learning environment.

"They've asked us to talk about homework, they've asked us to talk about curriculum and instruction. We have to provide them with instruction on their rights," says Demetria Armon, Director of State and Federal Programs.

"Lots of times we don't know what our children are facing unless we ask them. Some children don't feel like they can open up to their parents, that's why I'm here to learn more about what I can do for my child," says parent Yvonne Jones.

The meeting also included informational displays that allowed parents to learn more about the programs available to them.
