Rankin Co. Sheriff's vehicle catches fire during pursuit

Posted: Updated:

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A Rankin County Sheriff's vehicle catches fire during a pursuit of a suspected drunk driver.

Authorities have shut down one eastbound lane on I-20 about a half mile past the Brandon exit, causing traffic to be backed up in that area.

Richland Police tell us an officer attempted to pull over a suspected drunk driver on Old Highway 49, but the pick up truck never stopped. That began a chase into Byram, then Jackson, and finally through Rankin County on eastbound I-20.

The Rankin County Sheriff's Department and other agencies got involved. Spike strips eventually caused the truck's tires to blow out and it wrecked in the median. The driver has been arrested.

A Rankin County Sheriff's patrol car caught fire during the chase. A Richland Police officer tells us the vehicle got overheated in pursuit. The hot engine ignited dry grass beneath it and caught the vehicle on fire.

We are told no one was injured.
