RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - One man is in custody Sunday evening after leading several Rankin County law enforcement agencies on a chase Saturday night.
The pursuit ended in a wreck that forced the shut-down of an eastbound lane of I-20 near Brandon. The incident started in Richland around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
Richland police say an officer attempted to pull over a drunk driver on Old Highway 49, but the Chevrolet pick up truck never stopped. Officers chased the vehicle into Byram, then Jackson, and finally through Rankin County on eastbound I-20. That's when other law enforcement agencies joined in the pursuit.
"When he reached 1-20 became eastbound on 1-20 at that time we had several other agencies get involved at one point one of the agencies put down spike strips that took out the front two tires. He eventually wrecked in the median," said Richland P.D., Lt. Frank Craft.
The driver was arrested. Richland police say his identity will not be released until Monday.
During the chase a sheriff deputy's patrol car caught fire. Lt. Craft says the engine became extremely hot, sparking some dry grass and engulfing the car in flames.
No one was injured.
