OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Candidates in northern Mississippi's 1st Congressional District are taking part in their only debate of the campaign season.
Democratic incumbent Travis Childers and Republican challenger Alan Nunnelee are facing off Tuesday evening at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.
Seven low-budget candidates in the race were not invited to participate in the debate, which is taking place three weeks before the Nov. 2 general election.
Childers, of Booneville, was Prentiss County chancery clerk for 16 years before winning a special election to the U.S. House in May 2008. He won a full, 2-year congressional term that November.
Nunnelee, of Tupelo, has been in the state Senate since 1994.
