NEW SALEM, Miss. (AP) - Residents of the New Salem community in Itawamba County will meet Sunday to discuss how to save the local cemetery.
The New Salem Community Cemetery is located just off Mississippi Highway 25 south of Fulton.
The Northeast Mississippi Journal reports the cemetery has more than 478 gravesites, some dating back more than 150 years. There are veterans of the Spanish-American War buried there. It is still used by the community.
Local resident Irene Ausburn says it costs about $2,600 a year for upkeep for the cemetery, which includes mowing and care for new graves. The money comes from donations.
She says local residents would like to eventually raise $200,000 for a permanent trust fund to provide for the cemetery.
