Miss. I-10 rest stops undergoing renovations

GAUTIER, Miss. (AP) - Renovations are under way to two rest areas along Interstate 10 in Gautier.

Brad Anderson, a Mississippi Department of Transportation engineer, tells The Mississippi Press that work on the eastbound rest stop should be completed by Christmastime. He says work on the westbound rest stop is expected to be completed by April 2011.

Renovations to the restroom facilities began in December 2006 and were completed in 2008 at a cost of about $1.2 million. The rest stops were closed during that construction.

In April, MDOT began work on the grounds and the rest stops were closed again.

Anderson says the $1.1 million project includes sidewalk work, new lighting, an irrigation system and a sewage system upgrade.
