JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The largest private real estate development in west Jackson in 30 years officially opened Friday.

One University Place , an $18 million dollar building, across the street from Jackson State University, has 78 luxury apartments and 22,000 square feet of prime retail space.

It's at the corner of Dalton and Lynch Streets. It opened last month, but the ribbon was cut Friday morning.

The cost to rent the apartments ranges from $675 a month for a one bedroom to $1550 a month for a two bedroom, two bath.

Interim Jackson State President Dr. Leslie McLemore was one of the speakers.

We asked Dr. McLemore if he'd ever imagined such a grand structure to be built on the corners of Dalton and J.R. Lynch Streets.

"No, in my wildest dreams as someone said I never imagined that we would have a magnificent structure as this on this corner, that was designed to provide lodging but also a commercial establishment where people can come and spend time, in this area," McLemore said.

Leland Speed, a very successful Jackson businessman, who heads the JSU Foundation, talked about how important One University Place is.

"I think it's one more brick in building JSU into what it is and can be. But beyond that again it's a major step in the revitalization of the whole west Jackson area," Speed added.
