Books for Tots

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Jackson-Hinds Libraries kicked-off the second year of their "Books for Tots" program. The program emphasizes teaching literacy skills to toddlers by encouraging parents to read to their children.

Library officials celebrated the start of the registration period at the Eudora Welty Library in downtown Jackson, Monday morning. The Houston Texans organization from the National Football League is sponsoring this year's program.

A special ambassador from the Texans, former player Eric Brown, was on-hand to help bring awareness to the efforts of the library.

"This helps teach children literacy skills at an early age and it's something that a lot of us didn't have early on," The former Mississippi State Bulldog shared. "Now, with today's technology and the way things are going, literacy skills are so important."

With the program kicked-off, parents or guardians can register their child to participate in "Books for Tots" at any library in the system. Registration will continue through December 10.

Christmas will come a few days early for children who are enrolled, because they will receive a free book from the library on December 15. The books are provided from private donations and if you have books you would like to donate to the library you are encouraged to contact administrators.
