Taking Care of Seniors Citizens

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - The importance of healthcare for senior citizens was on full display in Downtown Jackson Wednesday morning.

Hundreds of seniors turned out to the Jackson Convention Center for the 17th annual Senior Health and Wellness Fair.

This event is a cooperative effort between the City of Jackson and Saint Dominic Health Services.

Seniors had access to free flu shots and dozens of free screenings, such as cholesterol checks and glaucoma tests.

Mayor Harvey Johnson, Jr., described why the city has taken such a proactive approach at taking care of senior citizens.

"They've made their contribution to our city, to our community, their church's, their neighborhoods," Johnson said.

"This is a way for us to make sure we provide them with the kind of services that they need and require to have a good quality of life."

Sister Dorothea Sondgeroth, the CEO of St. Dominic, said that the way things were organized this year the benefits went beyond the elderly.

"Instead of paying a fee, the vendors actually made a contribution of food to Stewpot (Community Services), which is doing a great job at feeding the homeless," Mayor Johnson said.

In addition to free screenings vendors provided resource information for disability services, Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare.
