VICKSBURG, Miss. (WLBT) - Do you consider Halloween a children's holiday with no negative significance, or do you link it with paganism?

Steven Rowland, Pastor of Bible Holiness Church in Warren County, says he was alarmed when he heard Vicksburg and Warren County families are being asked to trick or treat on a Sunday night.

"Yes ma'am, so were many of the other people of faith in this city. I have spoken to a lot," Pastor Rowland says. "No consideration is being given to Christians, those who exercise their beliefs, that will be in a church service somewhere on a Sunday evening."

Rowland worries that families will feel obligated to skip church on October 31 to stay home and hand out candy.

Rowland emailed Vicksburg's mayor and the Warren County Board of Supervisors a request to hold trick or treating on a different evening.

Most families will probably go ahead and trick or treat on Sunday night.

One woman who lives in a Vicksburg house decorated for Halloween didn't want to talk on camera, but she told us she's fine with attending church Sunday morning and giving out candy at night.

Others feel differently.

If trick or treaters come to David White's door in Openwood Plantation Sunday night, they'll find he won't be there to give out candy. "You got Thursday, Monday, why can't they do it then?" he asks.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace says the Board of Supervisors must be asked to change the date, and any group can make the request.

Sheriff Pace says he only asks to change trick or treating from Halloween night if it will cause a public safety issue.

For example, if Halloween fell on a Friday, he'd ask for trick or treating to be moved to another night because of the extra manpower needed for football games and child safety.

Pastor Rowland feels, through his email, he has made the request, but he's gotten no response.
