JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Jackson police are investigating an early morning attempted rape and home invasion.

The victim managed to escape, but police say her attacker remains hospitalized.

Around four Wednesday morning a woman living in the Pines Apartments on Watkins Drive told police she was awaken by a strange male voice at her door stating "Let me in".

According to Jackson Police Dept. investigators the 37 year old refused to open the door, but he didn't go away.

"The male went to the back patio door and kicked in the glass and gained entry. He proceeded to sexually assault the victim who was able to break free and run towards the kitchen to grab a kitchen knife," said Jackson Police Dept. Officer Colendula Green.

The unnamed victim fought off her attacker, stabbing him several times before he escaped.

Investigators have identified him as Vernon Dixon, 18, of Jackson.

"Officers were able to make contact with area hospitals, one in which advised him that the suspect was undergoing surgery at that time," said Green.

No one we spoke with at the complex would comment, but they directed us to the unit where they said it happened.

Wednesday evening no one answered the door.

Fingerprints appear to have been collected from the patio sliding glass door.

Shattered glass could still be seen on the ground and beneath children's toys nearby.

According to police the woman's three children were home during the attack but were not injured.

Detectives plan to question Vernon Dixon about this break in and assault upon his release from Baptist Medical Center.
