Rankin County, MS (WLBT) - The view from Skycopter 3 Thursday morning showed just how run down the old Rapids on the Reservoir property had become since it closed as a water park.
There were proposals to turn it into apartments and condos which produced a major controversy in the area by people who opposed that idea. The company could not make it in today's economy.
It is now leased by BankPlus and the Reservoir board has rezoned it commercial. Reservoir Manager John Sigman talked with WLBT about the property.
Sigman was asked what will happen to the reservoir property. His response to WLBT was, "Well we don't know for sure, but this morning our board agreed to change the zoning designation to commercial, at the request of a bank that now owns the lease, so I think the bank is gonna go forward and market some commercial uses for that property we'll learn more as they let us know."
Rankin County Supervisor Wood Brown was very relieved that BankPlus now has the property to develop with a commercial zoning.
"They are hoping to start today to clean it up, Rapids on the Reservoir, and make it attractive, and to try to market that to whoever it may be, but hopefully it will be somebody that Rankin County can be proud of," as quoted by Brown.
Both Brown and Sigman were confident people would like the new proposal for the worn down property. WLBT was unable to talk to anybody at Bank Plus about what they plan to do with the property at this time.
