WAYNESBORO, MS (WLBT) - Hundreds of people gathered Saturday to honor a fallen Mississippi soldier killed in Afghanistan.
Funeral services were held Saturday in Waynesboro for Sergeant Eric Newman, who was killed by an improvised explosive device while on patrol on October 14th.
Military and law enforcement officers led a procession to the cemetery, where a detachment of Newman's fellow soldiers carried his body to its final resting place.
American flags were presented to his family, a 21-gun salute was fired and taps was played.
Newman's mother says her son's enlistment in the army was to conclude in just a few months.
