COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - A Marion County emergency room physician at Marion General Hospital is in police custody and faces charges of attempted aggravated assault after he allegedly attacked a nurse with a knife Saturday night.
Authorities say Dr. Harry Hunt tried to assault the nurse in the hospital about 6 p.m., but injured himself instead. After the attack, authorities say Hunt fled into a wooded area behind the hospital. Officers searched that area for more than 6 hours, until he was caught about 12:30 a.m. Sunday on Highway 44, about 5 miles away.
Hospital administrators say Hunt worked at the hospital part-time and had been employed there for about a dozen years. Authorities don't have a motive yet for the attack, but they do say Hunt and the nurse may have been in a dating relationship.
Officers say Hunt will most likely make his first appearance in court Monday.
