Census shows poverty rising among Mississippi children

Posted: Updated:

MISSISSIPPI (AP) - Census figures show poverty is rising among Mississippi children, with nearly one in every three living below the poverty line.

The recent figures show that Mississippi's child poverty rate of 31 percent is higher than any other state's. That's up from 30.4 percent in 2008.

Andy Mullins Jr. is Co-Director of The Mississippi Teacher Corps and an Associate Professor of leadership and counselor education at the University of Mississippi, He says Mississippi has the highest percentage of children experiencing generational poverty.

He says teachers must be trained to meet the social and physical needs of children from generational poverty. He also says extreme measures are needed to break the connection between high poverty and low achievement.
