PIKE COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A series of traffic accidents shut down both southbound lanes of Interstate 55 in McComb, between Exit 13 (Fernwood Industrial Park) and Exit 17 (Downtown McComb).
The Mississippi Department of Transportation says the northbound right lane reopened shortly after the first crash around 2:45 p.m. Southbound traffic was being diverted to Highway 51 at Exit 20.
On Tuesday afternoon, an 18-wheeler struck a guardrail and burst into flames on I-55. Later, another 18-wheeler jackknifed at the North McComb exit. No injuries were reported in either crash.
Then, another 18-wheeler slammed into two vehicles, pushing them into another 18-wheeler. The vehicles burst into flames. Serious injuries were reported in that crash, which occurred within the McComb city limits.
In all, there were six wrecks in the McComb area Tuesday, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
