Multiple accidents on Interstate 55 in Pike County

PIKE COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A deadly day on I-55 in Pike County where police investigate 6 separate accidents that shut down the interstate.

It started around 2:40 PM Tuesday when MDOT says a Tyson chicken truck burst into flames after striking a bridge and overturning in McComb. The truck was traveling north when it lost control and crossed the median and crashed in the southbound lane. No injuries were reported.

McComb Police Chief Gregory Martin says shortly thereafter two cars collided south of the first accident.

At 3:32 PM the Mississippi Highway Patrol reported a third crash when another 18 wheeler jack knifed in the south bound lane. No one was injured.

The fourth crash just before 4:30 PM and involved a McComb police cruiser. Police say the officer was responding to the scene of the jack-knifed tractor trailer when the patrol car wrecked on the interstate also called Highway 98 at Park Lane.

M.H.P. says the fifth crash occurred around 4:30 PM when a northbound 18-wheeler on I-55 hit 2 vehicles at mile marker 15, pushing them into another 18-wheeler. They all burst into flames.

One person has been confirmed dead.

"It occurred in one of he vehicles between the 18 wheeler and the badly burned victim was also from one of the vehicles in between the 18 wheeler," said Chief Martin.

The highway patrol says the final crash happened around 5 o'clock . It involved three vehicles and also occurred on I-55 at Park Lane. Investigators say there were injuries. The accidents occurred within a 5 mile area of I-55.

All southbound lanes remain closed at this time.
