JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Children who are familiar with the "Between the Lions" TV show will be able to step into the TV show with one of the exhibits at the Mississippi Children's Museum at LeFleur's Bluff State Park in Jackson. There's a news desk where kids can read the news, a quiet reading corner, and more.

"They can build words, practice literacy skills, there's a large magnetic book where they can build their own fairy tale," says Director of Education Jen Cornet.

Another part of the museum our cameras were allowed to see on Wednesday, sneak peek day, is called "Home Par Course". Kids might think it looks like the house they live in, and they will learn how to get exercise from everyday objects. There's an upstairs and a downstairs to the "house". "There will be chores to do, along with sit ups and chin up bars," Cornet says.

Most of the 40,000 square foot museum is still under construction, but in just a few weeks, children and families will be able to jump into history lessons, role play, and learn about Mississippi history.

"We have five different galleries. Our signature gallery is a 5,000 square foot climbing map of Mississippi that celebrates our topographical features," says Museum Executive Director Susan Garrard.

Along with the Mississippi Heritage Gallery, the museum will include a Literacy Gallery, a Health and Nutrition Gallery, a Cultural Arts Gallery, and a World at Work Gallery.

"Family day is December 4, we hope to welcome families from around the state and region to come and celebrate with us. We'll have timed tours of the facility that day," Garrard says.

Admission price for the museum will be $8 flat rate for adults and children. Children who have not reached one year old yet will get in free. For families that may not be able to afford the admission price, the museum is working with the Kellogg Foundation and other organizations to make that possible.
