FORT WORTH, TX (NBC) - They say everything is bigger in Texas and one newborn is proving that point. In fact, doctors at a Fort Worth hospital say they've never delivered a baby this big. He's almost twice the size of the average newborn.
Justice Reighn Mansfield made his big entrance into the world on Saturday, three weeks before his due date. His mother has type 2 diabetes, so doctors expected he'd be 9 or 10 pounds at the most.
"We knew he was going to be a little larger than average, but nothing like this," says proud father Mike Mansfield.
Turns out this bouncing baby boy was a very special delivery. At 13 pounds, Justice is the biggest baby ever born at Texas Health Southwest. His size was a surprise, even to his mother.
"She said heard the nurses talking about someone having a 13 pound baby, she was trying to figure out who had a 13 pound baby and they said, "Honey that was you'" Mansfield laughs.
He's being monitored in the neonatal icu, but nurses say mom and baby are in good health. The mini Rangers fan should be home in time to watch the World Series.
