NEWTON COUNTY, MS (WLBT) – Friday night's football game between Newton High and Scott Central ended when shots rang out, leaving one man injured.
Newton County Sheriff Jackie Knight said gunfire erupted in the parking lot of the Newton High School Stadium on Highway 80, west of the city limits.
Several shots were reportedly fired around 8:30 p.m. According to the sheriff, 20-year-old Justin Evans was shot once in the leg.
The Newton man was transported a local hospital.
His condition is not known at this time. No other injuries were reported.
Sheriff Knight said the gunman is still at large.
No motive has been determined.
Officials stopped play between the Newton High Tigers and Scott Central Rebels at the beginning of the third quarter.
The game was scheduled to resume Saturday at seven o'clock at Morton.
