JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes is hoping to use a new city ordinance to rid his neighborhood of blight.
Stokes says he wants to seize a house at the intersection of Dale and Flora streets. Neighbors who have been complaining about the property have already collected petitions.
Under the ordinance, the city has the ability to seize properties that are deemed to be drug houses.
"This is the tool the city has needed to make sure we get these properties in responsible hands", says Stokes.
Walter Allison, a nearby resident says, "It's been a problem, we call the police four to five times a day."
Stokes says he wants to give the house to a nearby church, but they say the house may need to be torn down.
Stokes plans to present the petitions to the council on Tuesday.
Under the old ordinance, the city could just demolish properties. Stokes says often times they would return months later, only to find an overgrown lot.
