MADISON, MS (WLBT) - Voter turnout reached record numbers in Madison county election day, causing headaches and frustration for some voters. At some precincts like the Parkway Pentecostal church, the wait to vote exceeded over an hour.

District 2 Election Commissioner Kakey Chaney tells says part of the delay could be blamed on fewer voting machines at polling places.

Chaney says they allocated the number of machines based on turnout at previous mid-term elections. Some precinct workers say there were fewer than half the number of machines that are normally there.

Many voters who couldn't wait left, many of them planning to return when the crowds thin out.

Voting precincts close at 7 p.m..
