BOLTON, Miss. (WLBT) - Congressman Bennie Thompson fended off an attempt by Republican Bill Marcy to unseat the longtime Democratic representative.

Thompson is currently serving his eighth term.

The 62 year old was declared the winner in U.S. House District 2 early on Tuesday evening.

The Bolton resident thanked voters for a turnout on a rainy election day that gave him 60 percent of the vote.

"I work every day on behalf of the people, and I will continue to do that. I won't serve as Chairman of Homeland Security. I'll be the ranking Democrat, and this is what happens in a democracy," said Thompson.

Rep. Thompson returns to Washington, D.C. November 15th.
