JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Jackson City Councilman Jeff Weill was elected in Hinds County to succeed retiring Circuit Judge Swan Yerger.

The second term city councilman has represented northeast Jackson, and received 61 percent of the vote.

Weill campaigned on the theme of his 30 years of experience as a practicing lawyer, would give him the back ground to fix the slow moving Hinds Co. Judicial System.

"Well what we could do is we could get the cases moving along. You know we have got cases that take up to two years, once an arrest happens, and that's intolerable. And one way to fix that is to deny these delays, that attorney's ask the judge for. And just tell them look try these cases." Weill said.

City Councilman Weill commented on what he could do as a judge to fix the slow moving Hinds Co. Judicial System.

"I'm all for someone who has a crystal clean, squeaky record, and they have a non violence offense, you know, work with them. But once they mess up one time, then they are going to pay a price. And then the reason they pay a price is to send a message to their buddies, that if they mess up too, then they are going to the slammer." Weill said.

You may remember Weill as the man, who with some helpers, caught a 12 foot, four and a half inch alligator in Sept. of 2008 during the hunting season at the reservoir.

He had it's head mounted and showed it to us for the first time.

He says it is still the fifth largest alligator ever caught in Mississippi.

Weill says he will remain as a city councilman, as long as he can, before being sworn in as a circuit judge in Hinds Co. after the first of the year.

There could be a period of about a month or so when Northeast Jacksonians won't have a city councilman, until a special election is held.
