HINDS COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - The firing of cannons rang out in Utica Saturday.  One of the cannons dates back to the civil war.

Civil War Living History units from across the south gathered in south Hinds County over the weekend to demonstrate military maneuvers and drills.  The exercises are a way to brush up on weapons safety before the large reenactment shows.

"(We) just try to get the feel of what our ancestors went through.  Of course we can't because we go home to the real world Sunday night, but it gives us a little taste of it," said Master Sergeant Priscilla Davis with Fenner's Louisiana Battery.

"We really like what we're doing.  We're teaching people stuff.  Its fun.  We have a good group cohesiveness," said Sgt. Paul Lampton with Stanford's Mississippi Battery.

The demonstrations were at the same location in Utica where U.S. General McPherson and his troops encamped before moving on to the Battle of Raymond.
