SILVER CREEK, MS (WLBT) - Our sister station WLOX is reporting that a Mississippi oil worker has been kidnapped by rebels off an oil rig on the Nigerian coast.
We're told one of the men kidnapped is James Robertson of Silver Creek.
According to a CNN report, an armed group raided the oil rig early Monday morning. Four people were kidnapped along with Robertson. Two other crew members were shot in the leg and were air lifted to a company owned clinic. They are said to be in stable condition.
Robertson works for London-based Afren PLC. The rig is run by Transocean, the same company that managed the BP rig responsible for the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Robertson's friends in Silver Creek were stunned to learn he was taken hostage.
"I know his daughters," said family friend Kacey Slocum. "They're my age, real nice. I think he's got seven grandkids. He's just a real nice guy. Every time you see him he speaks to you and says hello. We just hope he comes home safe, and just pray for him."
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, and Afren PLC is hoping for a quick resolution.
When we contacted Robertson's family directly, they said Transocean and the FBI had told them not to comment.
