BYRAM, Miss. (WLBT) - One of the state's first public fishing lakes changed hands Tuesday.

Lake Dockery will now be operated and maintained as a community recreational lake by the City of Byram.

During a ceremony Tuesday afternoon, the Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks transferred authority over to the city.

According to Ron Garavelli, Chief of Fisheries, "Now the city is going to make it into one of their parks. Add recreational trails and sounds like they will do a little recreation for the kids."

The Mayor of Byram, Nick Tremonte told WLBT News, "It's our first park, it's probably our biggest park. Everything else is going to be a lot small than this. Yes, we would like for this to be a focal point of the city. We sure would."

The 80 acre lake was donated to the State Game and Fish Commission in 1935 by D.M. Dockery and his wife.

Legislators adopted a measure earlier this year to allow the transfer.
