RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT) - We had our attention called to the Longleaf Trace, which is more than 10 years old, by Jim Snider of Ride South.

He staged an event there this past weekend where riders were supposed to ride their age in miles or kilometers.

The trace is the route of the old Mississippi Central Railroad.

WLBT Chief Photographer Jim Duncan rode 22 miles.

About 120 riders participated in the event.

"It is one of the best rails to trails ah trails in the whole nation, from my understanding. It help's put us, we are actually 24th in the nation, as far as bycycle friendliness. I think that's part of the reason," Jim Snider said.

According to Snider, the percentage of bicycles now that are now recumbent models, where you sit down on either a two or three wheel bike, and pedal in front of your body, is now approaching six percent.

Of course, Snider favors the recumbent bike, because that is what he sells in Rankin County, just off Old Fannin Road.

"We think that they are safer, they are faster, they are more comfortable and more fun. That's what my customers are telling about them," Snider said.

The recumbent bike originally cost $4,800, but because it is used you can get it for about $4,000.

It only weighs 37 pounds and is lots of fun to ride.
