Criminal justice students reach out to crime victims

Posted: Updated:

RIDGELAND, Miss. (WLBT) – Criminal justice students are arming crime victims with information to help protect themselves as the holiday season approaches.

The Criminal Justice Society of Holmes Community College in Ridgeland hosted the seminar.

Ridgeland Police, Department of Corrections representatives, and others spoke to victims about ways to avoid falling prey to criminals.

Police talked about Ridgeland's Email Crime Alert System.

Corrections officials shared information about tracking convicted offenders and learning about their release dates through the department's SAVIN Program.

They also learned about victim's assistance services available throughout the state.

"We're hoping that we can prevent somebody from having to go crazy trying to not be a victim. We've got Identikits for the kids, helping the kids, helping the parents be aware of what dangers kids are in," said Criminal Justice Instructor Pamela Spence.

There are more than 200 students in the four year old Criminal Justice Program.
