New Hope assistant principal cleared

COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - A misdemeanor charge has been dropped against the New Hope Elementary assistant principal accused of not reporting the fondling of a first-grade girl by a first-grade boy classmate.

Circuit Judge Lee Howard ruled last month that there was insufficient evidence to pursue charges against Robin Ballard, who was charged in September.

Under state law, officials said in September that school officials must report such incidents to the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office.

The boy, who was accused of inappropriately touching his classmate during recess in the playground area, was disciplined but remains at the school.

Ballard declined to comment on the case for legal reasons.
