HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WLBT) - The University of Southern Mississippi is not giving specifics about the injuries of three football players shot at a Hattiesburg club this weekend.

Martez Smith, Tim Green and Deddrick Jones went to Remington's Hunt Club.

Around 1:30 Sunday morning, gunfire erupted after a fight broke out.

Martez Smith is from Madison County and attended Velma Jackson High School.

Larry Fedora, Head Football Coach at the University of Southern Mississippi, told a news conference all three players have apologized for letting the team down.

Fedora said Smith and Jones talked to him, but Green wrote his message because he cannot speak due to his injuries.

"He has just become a heck of a player for us, not only a player but a heck of guy, a good person, he is in his last class to graduate, this semester. And on the football field the guy was tremendous, he was a linebacker a special teams player, I mean he was the kind of player you were looking for always flying around hitting somebody and having fun you know," Fedora said.

Martez Smith attended Velma Jackson Magnet High School in Camden.

Smith was a linebacker in 2005-2006.

His coach Cedrick Wilder, who is now the Athletic Director and Head Coach at Velma Jackson, has fond memories of Martez Smith when he was in high school.

"He came here for homecoming and my son looks up to him a whole lot, it's a tough time to go through," Wilder said.

Martez Smith was recruited by several teams before deciding to go to Southern Mississippi.

His coach had high praise for him and said everyone here is just shocked at what happened.
