LEBANON, IN (NBC) - The parents of two young Lebanon, Indiana boys are facing tough questions after the children put two puppies in a microwave oven.
The 3- and 4-year-old boys admit putting the dogs in the microwave.
The dogs survived, but damage had been done.
"They put them in the microwave and decided...they decided to cook them. I don't know how long they were in the microwave or what possessed them to do it or where they got the idea," said Lebanon Police Lt. Brent Wheat.
The most visible damage to two-month-old Bailey is to his ears and tail.
A vet cropped his ears and removed his tail.
"There was quite a bit of tissue damage, is the reason they had to do that," said Mike Hancock, Boone County Humane Society.
He does have burns on his side and stomach, the scars have healed and the veterinarian believes he is in the clear.
"Personally, I was horrified when I first heard about it," Hancock said.
A neighbor spoke up and called police after seeing the dogs in the yard.
"The parents of the kids that did this to the puppies refused to take them to a vet," Hancock said.
The family has a third dog, which was tied to the front of the house Friday afternoon.
The Boone County Humane Society is trying to get the family to surrender that dog to them as well, because they say it is malnourished.
According to Lebanon police the boys that are responsible had been in the house alone.
Police reports claim the boys put sugar on the dogs and then cooked them.
The Department of Child Services is investigating the incident.
Humane society officials say there are bigger problems.
Boone County does not have an animal control officer and don't expect one anytime soon.
"When we impound animals or when we have animal problems, a uniformed street officer isn't necessarily the person you need chasing a dog through the neighborhood," Lt. Wheat said.
The Boone County prosecutor looked over the case and feels because of the boys' age, they are not capable of committing a criminal act, so they will not face charges.
Still, the parents may not be off the hook just yet.
