Suit alleges 'barbaric' conditions at youth jail

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The Southern Poverty Law Center, the American Civil Liberties Union and a Jackson attorney on Tuesday announced they filed a federal class-action lawsuit against the Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility south of Carthage.

The suit alleges youth incarcerated at the facility are "forced to live in barbaric and unconstitutional conditions and are subjected to excessive uses of force by prison staff."

The jail is operated by the Geo Group, Inc. It houses youth between the ages of 13 and 22 who have been tried and convicted as adults, according to a Southern Poverty Law Center press release issued in conjunction with a press conference Tuesday morning at the State Capitol.

The suit alleges that one inmate was tied to his bunk-bed for almost 24 hours and was raped and sexually assaulted after prison staff did not respond to his pleas for protection.

The suit alleges there have been other instances where inmates were stabbed and beaten. It also claims prison staff have sold drugs to inmates inside the facility.
