LEAKE COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT) - The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating the Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility in Leake County.

A letter was sent to Gov. Haley Barbour last month.

Tuesday a news conference was held outlining allegations of brutal conditions in the youth prison.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has filed a federal lawsuit over conditions at a juvenile prison.

They say some young offenders housed at the Walnut Grove facility have suffered abuses at the hands of guards, improper sexual relations and denied medical care.

"These young men live in barbaric unconstitutional conditions.  As a result of these conditions many youth have suffered physical injuries," said Sheila Bedi, Deputy Legal Director.

The facility houses young offenders between the ages of 13 and 22, who have been tried and convicted as adults.

The lawsuit describes the facility as "well known for its culture of violence and corruption" according to the ACLU and Southern Poverty Law Center.
