Simpson Co. jail groundbreaking set

MENDENHALL, Miss. (AP) - Simpson County will break ground Nov. 30 for construction of a new jail.

The Magee Courier-Simpson County News reports that the new jail is scheduled to open in 2012. It is being built at the site of the former Cal-Maine Foods feed mill in Mendenhall.

The new jail will house 150 inmates compared to the 44 who can be housed on the third floor lockup on top of the courthouse. The facility will also include a new sheriff's office and Justice Court.

The county has been under a court order for years to renovate the jail built in 1971 or construct a new one.
