CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT) - A pit bull fighting ring was broken up in Claiborne County over the weekend resulting in 25 arrests.
Sheriff Frank Davis says 13 dogs were confiscated on Highway 547 between Pattison and Port Gibson in the Saturday night's raid.
The 13 dogs were taken to the Vicksburg-Warren County Humane Society where they are being housed awaiting the orders of a court as to their fate.
Many of the dogs have wound marks on their bodies and are obvious veterans of pit bull fighting.
Sheriff Frank Davis, of Claiborne County, believes people are coming from all around to be involved in pit bull fights and be spectators in Mississippi.
"I really believe there is a series of dog fights going on in this state and outside this state. It just happened to be in Claiborne County this time. They are from every where, they are in this state, they are in Louisiana, they are in Alabama, Texas," Sheriff Davis said.
Georgia Lynn, President and Director of the Vicksburg-Warren County Humane Society, is very upset about it being likely that all 13 dogs will have to be put down.
"The only redeeming factor in it is if somebody has to go to jail. It's not the dog's fault," Lynn said.
Not all pit bulls are bad, but when they have been bred to be fighters, you never know when that will come out in them.
