JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Not all Thanksgiving travelers will be taking to the skies.  Most will be hitting the roads and riding the rails.

The lobby at the Greyhound Bus and Amtrak train stations in downtown Jackson were bustling with eager travelers.

Some individuals and families were looking to get a headstart on their holiday travels.

One such family was the Jacksons who usually fly to their turkey day destination. Derrick Jackson said that this year his family is opting to take the train.

"We're heading to New Orleans.  My kids have never been on Amtrak, so I figured we'd do something different," Jackson said. "Take a train, ride down to New Orleans and enjoy Thanksgiving with my in-laws there."

WLBT asked if the change in travel plans had anything to do with the Transportation Security Administrations controversial body scans and pat-down procedures and Jackson said, "no."

With millions nationwide taking to the roads for the Thanksgiving weekend, MDOT is encouraging motorists to be up-to-date on road and traffic conditions.

You can get that information by logging onto MSTraffic.com, or on your smartphone by going to MSTraffic.com/mobile.

And before you fill up on that long road trip, get to know WLBT's Gas Buddy. It will help you find the cheapest gas prices in the Jackson Metro area.
