JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The day after Thanksgiving for many is a time to get a head start on Christmas shopping and look for great deals.

However, what some people may not realize is that Black Friday is also a time that plumbers get the most calls because of clogged drains.

With all of the turkey skins, potato skins, and leftover food, they say it can be one of the busiest times of year.

"You've got to be kind of weary what you're putting down your lines and all, especially when your using the disposal," said Senior Roto-Rooter Tech, James Grays.

Grays says he's been out on about a dozen calls on Friday all related to clogged sinks.

"You have a big family come to enjoy the Thanksgiving, and you know you've got a lot cooking," Grays said. "People always putting excess material in the dishwasher and excess materials in the sinks."

Branch owner Paul Berlin says often these hard to dispose items get forced down the drain, and the clogging can affect the entire system.

"They tend to stick to the sides of the pipe and over time it just gradually builds upon itself and it just causes to have a clog," Berlin said.

Roto-Rooter says to avoid putting leafy greens down the sink, egg shells, uncooked food, or grease.

However, Berlin says often some grease is unavoidable and recommends using cold water to wash it down.

Also, after using the disposal run the water for about 15 seconds to continue flushing the food down the drain.

Lastly, Berlin says to consider annual tune-ups to the plumbing system to avoid future clogs.

"I think having it done like that would save a lot of hassle for folks because it is going to build up with time."
